Project 51

Project 51 has a mission you see,
to take memorabilia to Washington, D.C.
But more important than that
and it's stated, in fact
to honor all who help in an emergency!

Chicago was the only opportunity I had to see Project 51. I traveled from St. Louis to join 2 other Emergency fans. On Friday, May 5, we made a dry run to the Chicago Firefighters' Academy and spied the brilliant red trailer that transported Squad 51 across the country. We were too shy to do more than peer through the fence. The open side door of the trailer displayed a Project 51 poster, enticing us to return.

The following morning I arose early and traveled the always under construction tollway to meet with a friend in Des Plaines. We used public transportation to get downtown. May 6th was a sunny, Spring day in Chicago. The only damper on the day was a funeral to honor a Chicago firefighter who had died earlier in the week. Many fans held precious items they wanted Randy to sign. Promptly at 9:00 a.m. the gates opened and the Project 51 in Chicago was officially underway. Gino Grimaldi distributed paper squads to those waiting in line. The line snaked around making it easy to meet and visit with people as we approached first the merchandise area and then Randolph Mantooth, sitting with a poised Sharpie. Dick Friend, Cynthia Hawkins and Hannah Shearer were filling orders and giving change as fast as they could. Ed Self was at Randy's side, pointing camera after camera as people posed with the star. An area was cordoned off that held the gleaming Squad 51, in service at the scene of a rescue. The compartments stood ajar with the drug box and biocom already on the pavement. Facsimiles of Johnny and Roy stood nearby modeling their turnout gear. It was a scene out of "One of Those Days" as no victim was in sight.

Throughout the day visitors requested a closer view of the squad which was graciously granted. Small children performed CPR on their parents and spoke into the biophone while Gil captured the moment for posterity.

Shortly after the event, Project 51 posted photos on their website. May 6, 2000 was a day filled with fun that became delightful memories.
