These are rare examples of early 19th
Century warning devices. They were used by night watchmen
and constables to wake and warn citizens that a fire had erupted
in their town or village. At the time, electrical power was
not available, most buildings were constructed of wood, and
heat and light required open flames. Fire could spread quickly
from building to building, and fires were fought by volunteers
who formed bucket brigades and used hand-drawn apparatus.
The prompt warning of a muffin bell or fire rattle could make
the difference between control of a fire or the loss of numerous
homes and businesses.
